Corvo

Located at 39o 40´N and 31o 05´W, Corvo Island lies 14 mi north of Flores and 143 mi northwest of Faial.

It has 17.13 km2, 6.5 km long and 4 km wide, and a population of 425 inhabitants, being the smallest of the nine islands.

With a volcanic origin, Corvo Island consists of a single extinct volcanic mountain – Monte Gordo, crowned with a huge crater of subsidence locally called Caldeirao, with 3.7 km in circumference and 300 m deep and where lagoon lodges the Caldeirão.
